This is an essay on the various methods used by the Christian Church to indoctrinate its followers and control their minds. I have a firm belief that if a person is aware of these tactics, they can become immune to them. The Joy of Satan website goes into detail about the method in which boredom is used to make a person's mind more subject to what they are being taught, but there are other tactics of which I feel people need to be aware. For as they say, knowledge is protection.

One method is the exit cost. All the various sects of Christianity will build up the exit cost of leaving. For example, the Jehovah's Witnesses and Exculsive Brethren threaten anyone who leaves their religion with disownership. If the unlucky individual leaves, they can face being cast out of their families and losing all of their friends within their particular faith. The higher the exit cost, the more dangerous the Christian sect. Some churches, such as the Lutheran church and the Methodist church have very low exit costs in that the leaving member may only recieve a minimum amount of scorn from the other people within their church. However, there are some Christian sects that may actually kill a person who leaves. The exist cost is an attempt to dissuade anyone from leaving. As a result, the sect very rarely declines in numbers and so becomes richer and even more dangerous.

Another very common Christian mind control tactic is the use of love. People have a basic psychological need for plain affection. The Church knows this and uses it to its own advantage. Christianity preaches love to all of its followers. Churches often create communities so that its members feel loved within their environment. The members of the church then experience a feel good factor resulting from this primal need being satisfied in a safe and consenting atmosphere. When the Christian experiences this love and security mixed with intellectual teachings or the preachings of a leader, then their teachings will be associated with this brotherly and good feeling of being soothed and accepted. When encountering criticism of the Christian leader's teachings, the victim him/herself feels rejected, angry and hurt. It ties a person down to Christianity, and its ideas are preached very effectively without them knowing. It also increases the social exit cost.

The use of singing and/or chanting is another method of mind control used in the Christian Church. While singing or chanting in church, the Christian experiences regular loss of breath. This loss of breath and growing euphoria that comes with strong, repetitive exhalation serves to tie the atmosphere down to the theology. Following the song or chant is a period of relaxation for the individual. Immediately after this is a phase of susceptibility and suggestibility. A person is in a more docile state, their minds are fired up with oxygen and they will be slightly light headed. Perfect timing for some indoctrination!

Another method used by the Christian Church to brainwash its followers is known as "confusion and the voice of reason". Put the congregation through a confusing experience, such as a parable that makes no obvious sense, their minds will be unconsciously and automatically trying to figure it out. It is an automatic instinct and is used to get people's attention and subconsciously make them rely on the preacher's subsequent reasoning. This is the "voice of reason". Although the preacher's explanation of the parable may have nothing to do with the true meaning of the parable itself, this reliance placed upon the preacher by the listener means that the listener will swallow any teaching presented to them. This makes the congregation especially vulnerable to the Christian lies.

The Church also uses a method in which a preacher will tell his congregation exactly what they want to hear, for example, their stories of an "all-loving God" and how their "sins are forgiven". By being told what they what they want to hear, a congregation is more in tune with the preacher and will subsequently listen to and agree with any additional teachings the preacher may feed them. And as the entire congregation is feeling the same, a sense of security is created in the individual. This feeling of security and belonging is not felt by the person anywhere else but during a church service. As a result, the person becomes reliant upon the church to fulfill this sense of belonging which all human beings need. This increases their church attendance and therefore makes them more susceptible to the Christian indoctrination.

The giving of food and drink (bread and wine) is yet another tactic used by the Church to make its followers and suggestible as possible. In some churches, starvation is encouraged before a Mass. This further works to the church's advantage. When a person is fed, their brain is stimulated, causing more neuron pathways to be connected. During this period of stimulation, the mind is dangerously open to suggestion. Anything the victim is told during this stimulation of the brain is swallowed up without question.

So, as you can see, most of what the Christian Church does in terms of its services, is designed to do nothing more than indoctrinate its followers with lies and trickery. The very way it is organized is evident of its hold over the populace. The Church is growing stronger all the time, much of it as a result of the mind control methods listed above. However, once a person knows of these tactics, the Christian Church loses its hold over that person. The more people know, the weaker the grip of the Church over the people. As stated on the Joy of Satan website, Christianity is a sick, twisted, perverted religion that needs to come to an end and soon is not soon enough!

A brilliant essay, I quite enjoyed it. It definitely would do well to be read by questioning Christians, or in general anyone interested in psychology and brain washing.

Absolutely brilliant. A fine essay that deserves to be read by all. You perfectly show the corruptness and mind control methods of the church. Bravo!
