Was he a real living God or a force of nature maybe? because Ra needed help to keep him at bayThe say he was the first god of the sun until Ra defeated him.

In some depictions, Apophis was born from darkness and chaos, making him the mortal enemy of light, and fuelling his desire to overthrow the balance of all things.

Apophis takes a form of an enormous serpent of 50 feet long, which is why he earned the nicknames ‘Evil Lizard’ and ‘Serpent from the Nile.’ The word Apep is derived from the Egyptian word meaning slither and could also be used as a term for being spat out, which would refer to the way Apophis was shunned and removed from his position as god of the Sun.

There are even some depictions of Apophis being described as a crocodile that swims in the dark waters of the underworld. In later Greek and Roman stories, he was described as an enormous golden snake, several miles long with the head of stone.

He is an allegory of the Kundalini, like many other Dragons which the Gods fights in different mythologies.

This is images depicting him. He is said to eat the souls of the dead. He cannot be killed.

Could it be a real creature on the astral plane maybe that Ra and Thoth chained up inorder to keep the souls of the dead safe?

This snake was the sun god until Ra and Ra is Satan if i understand correctly.

This serpent was born out of Ra's birth cord. He was the only one who could take on Ra(Satan). Ra needed help to keep him at bay. He turned into a rabit that cut this serpent with a knife. What does that mean.

I saw on a Egyptian painting the snake was depicted under a tree keeping it for himself. Later Ra took his place and Ra had to defend the tree from him.

This reminds me of the tree of forbidden knowledge, good and evil ect...

He was also never worshiped.

I was going to say that he (or He) seems to be just an anti-god, anti-hero, an antagonist, devil. Look at "the serpent" in the bibles, and see the similarities. Maybe that is just how certain things have depicted him.

Apophis seems to be more of a force, which is hard to master and tame more so an actual being itself. Reason why I say this is because Ra and Set are there, which from an astrological allegory perspective, is the energies of the Sun and Saturn. The Sun empowers the Kundalini and Saturn stabilizes and teaches discipline, and how to master the serpentine energy. Raw energy in and of itself if one doesn't know how to program or use it, or have the proper mantras or chants, can lead to lack of success with what you want to do with it.
