When I was a kid, can't say how young, around 10 maybe, my grandma's house had a giant calendar on the wall. The calendar part on the giant frame was small but the main part was a huge picture of Lord Shiva (was common in India to have pictures of gods on calendars). Though the calendar was for a few years back, it wasn't thrown away as it had his picture and served as a decoration piece because of this picture. Below the picture was written a mantra, the Mahamrityunjaya (pronounced Ma-ha-mri-tyun-jaye) mantra. The mantra was written in sanskrit. At that age I could barely read hindi but hindi having the same script as sanskrit I tried to read it.
I was beyond attracted to the mantra. Couldn't read it, had never spoken words so complex before, so I asked my mother and grandma and over my stay at her house I kept asking how to say it. That's how attracted I was to this mantra. By asking my grandma and my mom again and again over the days I was able to fully memorize the mantra by heart. To this day I know the mantra by heart. As a boy that's how much attraction I felt to it, that to this day I haven't had to read it again and I know it. It never escaped my mind.
But what is this mantra? What does it do? What is it for? Here is how it goes.
Aum Triyambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam. Urvarukmiv Bandhnan Mrityurmukshiya Mamrtat.
Aum Tri-yam-bakam Yaja-mahe Su-gan-dhim Pushti-var-dhanam. Ur-va-ruk-miv-bandh-nan Mrit-yor-muk-shi-ya Mam-r-taat.
The stories and tales around it are all really fascinating. Said to avert death. There is a tale around it, when a 16 year old kid recited it and not even death could touch him.
I don't recite it for any workings or empowerment because I don't know exactly what it is. But my fascination with this mantra over the years has been unparalleled.
Anyone know anything about this?
