It's not inherently evil for someone to build a 'character' for themselves but this is by no means within any realm of fantasy and should be in focus to actual realistic personal goals instead that are still of one's self. Not in pretending to be someone(or something...) else, but in striving to transform who you are now into a better you.

If someone's trying to build a personality for themselves as one of strength, confidence, bravery and determination, that is something to be desirable in personal attainment to aid in growth and advancement. But this is not found by unrealistic ideations of "I'm the 5th warrior of the ninth circle of hell risen from an ancient tomb from the lost caverns of an ancient civilization and I'm here to bring glory for the human race".

There's a lot of ways to build personal traits that are beneficial for yourself and to help take on those characteristics by embracing such, but that's not how it's done. When one falls into the realms of fantasy, they think it's a shield from reality... until reality is what they will at some point be forced to face and then they crumble from the shock and inability to really handle it.
