Mars square questions

I wanted to ask some questions as someone who has not yet done a mars square. I have done a number of sun squares, jupiter squares, and a mercury square. But I do have some of the issues listed in the "spotting a debilitated/afflicted mars" post. So I think this would be a great time for a mars square. I am struggling with the affirmation though. I do know they can be somewhat individual, as we can take different meanings and place different intentions on the same words.

If I were to do an affirmation for a mars square, it would be one of two possible affirmations. But I am not sure which I should use, as I cannot find a clear meaning of the difference between an afflicted or debilitated mars. Is it just a matter of negative karma? Or is an afflicted mars simply one that is underpowered? Is it one that manifests in the wrong ways?

Should my focus be on removing negative karma from my natal mars, as this is my first mars square and it is the lesser malefic? Or should I be empowering my mars while I also remove negative karma? Or should I be focused on how my natal mars manifests, and affirm that it manifests in only positive and healthy ways?

I am somewhat stumped on this, and I could use some advice if anyone has any. I would like to find the best ways to do this. And I would really like to set the meaning of the words I'd use into my subconscious, so my working is as beneficial as it can be.

Thank you for your time, to those that read this!

All of the energies in our soul, including Mars, can be thought of as a combination of patterns, those which both create and detract from our prosperity. Some of these patterns are more clearly positive or negative relative to the traditional operation of Mars and how it is applied, whereas others are less obvious.

So, when you are raising this Mars-based energy through this Square and attempting to transform yourself with it, you are adding positivity to this combination of patterns, based on your affirm. Looking at the traditional rulerships of Mars, this can be improving an element of vitality, sexuality, competition, or aspects of Plutonian behavior, given the Scorpio position of Mars here.

For you to add positive patterns to your soul, sometimes this requires the destruction of negative ones, which will occur as the energy of Mars here rewrites the negative karma which stands in the way of your stated objective. For example, someone who has Mars in Cancer may have elements of weakness/shyness that causes others to take advantage of them; this would be overwritten if you use Mars in Scorpio for positively improved competitive ability. Yet, the positive aspects of Mars in Cancer would remain.

Here, affliction refers to a deficiency, but that is not always the case. Mars in aspect to Pluto or Jupiter are two examples which could cause excessive behaviors. While Mars in aspect to Jupiter would generally be seen as stronger than a deficient example, the excessive patterns which may still be present here would still represent negative karma, even if the situation is "less negative" than other examples.

Although negative karma can be destroyed through "constructive-style" workings, it is normally freeing workings which are most efficient for this, as they take advantage specific energies, such as Munka or Ansuz, as well as appropriate times, such as the waning moon and sign of Pisces, in order to best facilitate the destruction of patterns which no longer serve us. Therefore, I do not normally affirm my planetary Squares for the only purpose of removing karma, although I understand this can happen naturally by other means, as explained above.

If you want my opinion, I normally use Squares with an affirmation similar to improving my soul's energies related to that planet, along with added conditions based on what I want to happen. I leave my affirmations broader because I am more confident in how the energy manifests, but there is nothing wrong with using specific terms, especially if the issue in focus is a major one for you.

Thank you so much! This answered my questions perfectly. I really appreciate it!
