The difference, I believe, is in the context.

We've progressed technologically. We haven't evolved spiritually.

Beings evolve, civilization progresses.

Progress is where humans are able to create AI. Evolution is where humans use it properly: we have the communist government of China who use it to spy on the population, which is not good, it's not a form of evolution, or we have doctors who use it to diagnose cancers with better accuracy, and it's good, very good.
