According to Joy of Satan, what is the symbolical difference between the upright pentagram and the inverted pentagram? Do they both serve a purpose within Spiritual Satanism?
I think the logic with shapes like stars for example is:
If is pointed down the energies are directed inside.
If is pointed up the energies are directed outside.
As stated in JoS, this abuse of the pentagram are depreving the planet from the energies, causing problems.
It's stated in the meditation section I think.
They are not "upright" and "inverted". The oldest pentagram discovered was in Sumeria and is point down, just like the one we use. The idea that the point-up pentagram is the right one and the other one is inverted is 19th century Right-Hand Path bullshit and it came from individuals and organizations who practiced jewish magick, like the Golden Dawn and Eliphas Levi. Just like the idea that the one is good and the other one is "evil"
A lot of medieval xian churches also feature point-down pentagrams:
Of course, these were Pagan symbols and the xians stole them. But it was considered a symbol of good luck and protection, that's why they put it there.
The point up pentagram sends the Earth's energies into space while the point down pentagram brings cosmic energies to Earth to protect and empower it. This has been explained on JoS. That's why only the point down pentagram is used here.
What I wrote here isn't completely true. I looked up the church in the first picture (Marktkirche in Hanover, Germany) and it is explained that the pentagram is used there as a symbol for the epiphany.
Epiphany means god or the divine manifesting in sensible form.
The Satanic concept they stole this from is obvious, if you consider the fact that "god" is often used as a code-word for the self.
Which is why the RHPers use the point up pentagram, they want to destroy the self and absorb it into some vague oneness instead of actualizing the self and their will.
