I put on my headphones (not the stereo ones, the cell phone ones) and did something I had thought of doing (sorry, be sympathetic, I'm just trying, I'm not saying it's useful).

I basically turn off all my thoughts and with my eyes open I listen to music. Spontaneous images begin to appear in my mind. They are concrete images, but they are obviously not real things. They are vivid just like they are really there, though.

I don't think, "Why does a red-headed singer appear to me, dancing and wiggling?", I simply let it flow and silently observe what is automatically generated.

An example, this song:

One of the mental images is David Bowie who sings. David Bowie is not correlated of course. But I don't care and I don't ask. But a man looking like David Bowie appear in my head, in the left zone, on the right there was a blonde boy who plays the guitar, in the middle a curly long haired man who plays drums, and so on...

What do you think?

What you’re doing is a useful exercise to begin accessing the highest form of sensory and mental perception; high and true synesthesia at its most elevated level, is linked to the fourth dimension. Thre synesthesia is when all your senses operate on deep levels of synergy and complementarity.

There are different types of synesthesia. I’m naturally inclined to see the colors of musical notes. One exercise I try to do when I can is playing my guitar bass and attempting to see the colors of the notes I pluck, even though it becomes difficult to do it this way. Or when I listen to music, I see and perceive colors. I don’t quite see full scenes like you do, though. The same thing happens to me with words and smell.

Synesthesia is something I’ve had for as long as I can remember. I really love synesthetic meditations, because it seems they open up other mental "pathways".

Do you also have a time limit? Like after 15 minutes you can't have these spontaneous visions anymore and you have to rest?
Sorry if I answer now. I can concentrate on sounds and colors even several times a day. But I still haven't checked whether I have this limit as you write; I'll try to see if that's the case.

Al Jilwah: Chapter IV
