Both the Forest and Outlast have similar enough inspirations of occult research from the 20th century. It's a surface level interpretation of "Daaaamn, so the nazis wuz doin occultism and shiet" and interpreting that as "messing with nature". Outlast is far more in your face with this, The Forest isn't.
The Forest also at least had the sense of using occult symbols that align with those of the Enemy moreso. Cubic, Saturnian artefacts that are used to cheat life using technology, that sounds very Enemy to me. But they link this with conspiracies about "secret research" that also end up hitting us.
Don't look too hard into these things, because odds are the game developers didn't either. They did their research so as to find visuals and that's about it.
