When we do something everyday for long periods of time, no matter how much we enjoy it, it becomes an habit, something we are used to. When we first start we are highly motivated, we want to do everything perfectly, but as time goes on, one thing that can happen is that we don't do it with the same diligence and attention anymore.
When you first started you used to be much more focused to the details, you used to do the exercises with attention and with a willingness to do it very well, but with time, without you even noticing, you might have started practicing with unnecessary haste, without focus and with laziness.
To be disciplined and diligent is very important. But you need to help yourself too.
Some advice I can give you to not make this mistake is to remind yourself on a regular basis, maybe once a month, why you're doing this. What is the goal? We all are different, and different things motivate us. The enemy New Age and such, always says that one should meditate and practice Yoga with the only goal of being a selfless idiot that only eats grass and loves everyone unconditionally, otherwise the techniques won't work. This is obviously false.
Spirituality is extremely vast. Maybe it's healing others with your powers that motivates you. Maybe it's Telekinesis, maybe Astral Projection, maybe seeing the Gods and communicating with them, maybe getting rid of negative karma in your life. It's all fine. Don't be ashamed of what motivates you, and ignore anyone that tries to foolishly impose on you what you should purse and what you shouldn't. What will happen most of the times is that during your path you will discover so many different things, that what motivated you in the beginning will likely change. What really matters is that you practice the exercises and Meditations with diligence and intent.
Something that also helps is to remind yourself to be diligent before every session. Say to yourself that you're going to be focused, think of all the steps that you're going to follow, and establish a clear intent from the start. This can be done in 5/10 seconds, but it really helps to set the tone.
Also I suggest you that you read the instructions of whatever exercise or Meditation you're doing periodically. We tend to forget important details sometimes.
Now what follows is a list of tips, not in order of importance, that might help you:
1) When you meditate, keep your spine straight. Keeping your spine straight helps tremendously and it allows you to breathe well. It's also very important because the energy flows much better. This might seem very obvious to some, but slouching is a very common thing these days.
2) Control your breathing. Having a pre-established breathing pattern is very important. Breathing well and with a pattern increases focus massively. Don't underestimate it. When you lose focus, first start breathing correctly again. You should never feel uncomfortable when you breathe.
3) Believing that it's possible for you to be focused for a considerable amount of time is very important. I'm not saying vague belief. If you really are convinced that you can focus, your focus will actually increase a lot. You have to be careful at the same time to not create false expectations, especially if you are new, but conviction really helps. You saying to yourself that it's very possible for you to focus, will push you to be as diligent as possible, and you will see a big difference.
4) Meditation should be enjoyable. One indicator that you are meditating well is that once you are done, you feel much better emotionally and mentally. When you meditate you should be relaxed, you should be enjoying yourself, you should have a positive feeling inside of you. You should never be frustrated, tense and excessively worried about the execution. Yes you should be diligent, but it shouldn't be a stressful activity.
5) When you use affirmations, what can happen is that you start repeating them without even realizing what you're saying after many repetitions. It becomes automatic. This is not optimal. Try to always be present and focused on the meaning of the words you are saying.
6) You have to impose your will. Intrusive thoughts will try to distract you, but you need to banish them with a strong intent. Reject all intrusive thoughts with determination. You should do this while you are relaxed at the same time, so it's really not that easy.
7) Belief is key. When you're working with energies, having the absolute belief that the energy is real and powerful is very important. This might seem weird, but it's true. There are levels to belief. Someone that manages to have an incredible level of belief that the energy is real and very powerful will be much more effective than someone who has even a few doubts.
