Saved my ass again!

When HP maxine said Satan watches over us she sure wasn't kidding.
Here I was thinking it was just inconvinient our hot water heater broke down
(electric) Ive been bitching and joking about it.
meanwhile I never even knew I had a timebomb sitting right under my room, almost
under my bed.
Its a 23 year old heater, it broke down a year ago and we had the element
replaced. Now it broke down again, but it was the overflow valve so the unit was
still heating but the water was running out and flooding the garage.
In the corner of the room is a gas cylinder under the house. Its my mums house
she will never fix anything, I couldnt lift or move the cylinder it wasnt
leaking so it just stayed there and I forgot about it, yeah I know stupid.

Its within a few meters of the hot water heater. So last night my friends
partner who had been in another city a few months had just got back up here, so
my friend asks him if he would mind checking our heater. The timing of this is
uncanny he knows all about these things.
He comes round and looks it all over, looks inside and sees the circuit board is
cooked. We were at serious risk of a fire the element was running dry heating
air and the circuit board had already melted. It could have caught fire while we
were asleep and the gas cyclinder could have exploded. So all the power
downstairs is now shut off, and Im getting someone to come take away the
cylinder and we get a new heater.

It could be a coincidence but the fact is if he had not come round today the
element would still be heating up and anything could have happened. So...

<td val[/IMG]Like 17 years ago when I was 4 years old this actually happened to me for real. My mom and I were the only ones home. I believe Satan was watching out for me. We lost a lot of stuff. It could have been a lot worse. I am thankful to be alive.

This story didn't end when I posted this, things got more interesting.
It turns out the wrong switch was turned off. We were at least now aware of the fire hazard. Later that night around 2.30am I was still up and went to the kitchen and heard all kinds of weird noise, banging and goings on down under the house. I had a strong urge to get out of the house, I told my mother to get up and call the fire brigade I wasn't about to wait and find out if it was a danger or not I would rather look foolish having called for nothing than to wait and have the thing explode or start a fire.
She didnt want to call or go outside she was in a daze... she is a very hard woman to cope with so I went down and looked in the door the water heater was boiling almost dry and there is no switch to shut it off. We would have had to shut power to the whole house and been in pitch darkness and its pitch dark outside and cold, we were in our dressing gowns, I didnt even know how to find the main power switch anyway, our power goes underground they may even have to do it at the street box.

So we rang 000 and it took 30 minutes for them to come, we are in the bush so we went and waited out the front. They got it all shut off and checked it and said it was good we called because it could have started a fire. They moved the gas cylinder aswell for us.

We still have no hot water but at least we are ok. If I had been asleep I wouldnt have heard the heater going nuts. If my friends hadnt checked it the day before I may not have realised it was dangerous.

I guess theres a message here for everyone, trust your instincts. better to feel silly if it turns out to be nothing than dead if it turns out you were right.
