"Negative karma" is just a term we use as reference to the various spiritual impurities that hinder in some way the good and positive manifestation of our nature and the advancement in the material and spiritual matters.
Negative karma accumulates in the absence of purification and protection practice; it's like when the immune system is weak, and therefore the body is no longer inclined to adequately defend itself from external aggressions, allowing diseases to develop.
The origins are of various kinds, but the reason why these accumulate is none other than the passivity of the soul ie. lack of protection and strength in repelling these energies. The reason why they acculumate is not lack of protection or purification. Protection is a measure of prevention, while purification is mitigating and remove the damage.

Karma, whether good or bad, is just a consequence of how you manage yourself.

The reason why harmful karma accumulates is thoughts, actions and behaviours in general that are detrimental to a beneficial growth. These are in turn due to ignorance, stubbornness in the wrong things and other factors.

Even what results from our behaviors and thoughts results from an energetic matrix to which they refer, which can have links with karmic issues. Of course I would not consider the act in itself of thought, stubbornness and behavior, the energetic intervention at the origin, although it may be a contribution to the Karma that we lend ourselves to establishing.
A way of thinking obviously generates karma, but it also results from particular circumstances that originate from individual karma.
The purification and protection intervention has a notable impact on the soul of an individual, and also on the karmic issues of the soul.
