hypothetically speaking
one dies of heart attack due to substance abuse and unhealthy lifestyle
then he is reincarnated in a family with a predisposition to cardiovascular diseases and is attracted to the use of substances from an early age
if he manages to defeat his addictions in this life, will he have the same attraction/predisposition in the next one?
is one life enough to destroy these karmic patterns?

One life is certainly enough time to destroy karmic patterns, provided all the right steps are taken. Depending on how bad the problem is, it could take a few years or more of constant effort, but it is certainly possible and should be pursued regardless.
