Will affirmations work without breathing in energy or visualizing yourself ingolfed in white gold energy like the sun?
Will they work just saying them to yourself?

No of course that won't be effective. Affirmations are used to program energy, so in order for them to be truly effective some energy must be there to program, that is why you first raise energy and then you program the energy. 
Besides, vizualizing yourself in white golden light is one of the first things a new SS should learn, it is a basic skill where everything else is build upon and must be mastered. 
It only takes a few seconds to engulf yourself in white golden light when you are good at it, so there is no reason not to atleast visualize white golden light from the sun when trying to stare affirmations...
