"Putin invades" says the headline on the Guardian front page, which along with every other paper is dominated by the first day of the Russian attack on Ukraine. It says Ukraine is fighting for its survival with hundreds dead or injured in a huge Russian offensive, alongside a photo of a woman injured in an airstrike - the face of the conflict for several front pages.
The Times turns its masthead black as it declares "a dark day for Europe". The same woman, bloodied and bandaged, stares out from the page as the paper says Russian forces have laid siege to Ukraine's capital Kyiv after a lightning attack.
"Her blood... his hands" is the headline on the front of the Daily Mirror, alongside contrasting images of the bandaged airstrike victim, who the paper says is a teacher, and "power-crazed" Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Sun leads with a version of the same headline, condemning the "murderous invaders" and saying they stood just 15 miles from Ukraine's capital of Kyiv on Thursday night.
"Putin to seize capital in days" warns the Daily Mail's headline. The paper says Ukraine's president warned of a "new Iron Curtain" descending on Europe - a reference to the political boundary that divided the continent for more than four decades after World War Two.
The Daily Telegraph's headline warns of a "new cold war as Putin strikes", as Western powers condemned the "pariah" Russian president. The paper says Ukraine remained defiant despite Russian troops seizing control of a strategic military airfield just outside the capital.
Beside an image of fire and smoke rising from the site of a missile strike in Kyiv, the Financial Times says the West condemned the biggest challenge to European peace in 80 years. The paper quotes US President Joe Biden warning that Mr Putin wants to re-establish the former Soviet Union, which stretched across more than a dozen states to the west and south of Russia.
"Ukraine's agony" is the i newspaper's headline, alongside a photo of a woman clasping her hands, as if in prayer. The paper says more than 50 people have been killed, hundreds are injured and hundreds of thousands are trying to flee on gridlocked roads.
A quote from Prime Minister Boris Johnson gives the Daily Express its headline, saying Mr Putin is trying to "redraw the map of Europe in blood".
"War in Europe" is Metro's headline, as it says Mr Putin was branded a "21st century Hitler" by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Daily Star front page makes the same comparison in a mocking tone, crudely painting a Hitler moustache and slicked hair onto an image of the Russian president. "Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Putin?" the paper's headline asks.
