what is a good rule of thumb for beginning of breathing/visualization exercises time wise? How long should they be as a minimum?

It has nothing to do with the clock. You can feel when your meditation is complete or when you should keep at it for a bit longer. Just quietly check in with yourself; you'll know, or at least you will come to know after a bit of practice.

Also keep in mind that not every meditation session is created equal so to speak. There will be times when it just blows you away with its power; at other times there may be little of that easily apparent BUT having said that, that does not in any way imply that those meditation sessions are useless or of lesser benefit.

you should worry about going until you can feel the effects of the meditation. for some people 15 minutes is enough for a session. others can go for and hour and longer. just start out small, maybe a  few minutes. it doesnt matter how short the meditating is , as long as you can feel it. especially when you are new you should go slow and take your time getting the feel for it. you dont want to push yourself.  also, meditate when you are wide awake and not tired. over-stimulating the chakras or breathing exercises can cause damage to the nervous system, so dont over-due it.
