The practice of Årsgång or the "omen walk" is an ancient Swedish divination practice of taking a walk out at night on Winter Solstice. Before this, it was on the pagan new year, of which long ago was Samhain. This was a practice of divination and prophecy, of which during the participant would encounter all kinds of visions, many of which bode omens of what was to come for the following year for good or ill. The participant is to fast, especially for the afternoon meal. They are to set out without looking back and not smiling or laughing at anything they see, lest their faces be frozen in the expression forever.
If someone has performed the yearly walks while abiding by all of the rules for 7 years straight, a man will come riding, on the last day of the 7th year. His neck will be on fire and he will have a rune stick in his mouth. If the one who performs the walks is daring enough he will run up and snatch the rune stick out of the riders mouth. He will then become all knowing and wise and know anything that is asked of him. To get a dwarfs hat, the participant must perform the walk for another 2 years for a total of 9 years. during the walks many funny and playful dwarfs will be encountered. Again if the person smiles or laughs at anything he sees, Everything will have counted for nothing and the 9 years will have been a waste. He then must start all over again.
The practice of Årsgång is another ancient allegory for the magnum opus, as the magnum opus is completed around Yule time in December. The years represent the total and complete empowerment of the chakras as the human works on becoming immortal while plowing through all the trials and tribulations that may distract them, ie the dwarves, the funny things to make them laugh or loose track of the path. The rune stick is symbolic of the level of understanding of wisdom and perception one reaches, i believe, in the first stage(s) of the magnum opus. The symbolic meaning of finally acquiring a dwarfs hat after 9 years, despite many obstacles is the final stage in reaching the godhead.
Just as the yule tree symbolizes the human soul, the spine of the tree being the kundalini, the lights and ornaments lighting up being the nadis of the soul, and the gifts under the tree symbolizing the fruits of ones labor being reaped after complete spiritual evolution.
