I think the communist revolution in China is responsible for this.
People were made poor and because of hunger they started eating what they could find,
kinda like what happened in Russia with the communist revolution.
Even now many Chinese in the villages live poorly.

This is just the Vedics, but every ancient culture had eat meat. This in itself is a rational proof, that we should eat meat, because if people from the golden age, where the Gods were in control, people have eaten meat, than we should. Of course because dogs and cats are carnivore and therefore their meat is disgusting. They are superior in the food chain and because they eat herbivores they are much smarter animals, and close to ourselves who also eat herbivores that's why they are also our pets. Sacred animals to the Gods, much of them are carnivore as well such as Lions for Sekhmet. Most small birds are also carnivore which makes their brain have higher density and therefore also very smart, like crows.
Now society should reconsider on the habit of eating pork and exclude them too, because they are omnivore, which makes their meat stinky and prone to diseases (as in their raw meat), but also is what makes them higly intelligent animals like dogs.

In China presently, the official line is Mao did "30% bad, 70% good." (Don't ask me where they derive those exact numbers.) This is rather short of adulation, much less idolization, as you point out.

As far as eating dogs and cats goes, dog-eating is diminishing. www.caninebible.com estimates 10-20 million dogs are eaten in China yearly. That's about one dog for every 70 people per annum. Some minorities like the Manzu ("Manchu") eschew dog entirely, as do the Muslims. Urbanites, especially the educated, very rarely eat dog. Cats? In the north where I live, people snicker about the folks in Guangdong (Kwangtung) being cat-eaters. Something on the order of how Yanks used to sneer at Italians for the same reason.

If one wants to criticize the Chinese, one might start with their rabid consumerism. Technological novelty is confused with "improved" living. But that attitude is scarcely a purely Asian vice, no? Believe this long enough and one does indeed turn sub-human.
