lets say venus in virgo is sextile mercury in scorpo or something.

does this mean the energies of virgo (as well as venus, and any related issues, such as problematic thinking towards love/romance) will begin to colour the traits of that person's scorpio, as well as any other aspects?

Or do you take the traits of venus as its typical description and blend it with that only?

You have to blend everything in Astrology. When Venus in Virgo and Mercury in Scorpio are in aspect to each other, it allows the qualities of Virgo to influence how Mercury (communication) operates in the context of Scorpio (emotional depth, intensity), especially about Venusian matters. This interaction can lead to a blending of traits, where the practicality and analytical nature of Virgo can temper or enhance the emotional and transformative qualities of Scorpio. Nothing is left to chance and one would also need to see which houses are ruled by these two planets for a more precise interpretation.

However, this might manifest as a person who values meaningful connections and is willing to engage in deep, thoughtful and transformative discussions (Mercury) about love and relationships (Venus). They may be particularly cautious (Virgo) but also deeply invested (Scorpio) in understanding their emotions and the emotions of others (emotional security is important for Venus in Virgo and Mercury in Scorpio wants to know the secrets of others). Mercury in Scorpio is naturally intuitive and excellent at research and is not satisfied with superficial knowledge, but like to probe the depths of things and Virgo is ideal suited for this, since Virgo likes to thoroughly analyze things to perfection (although the unpredictability of emotions could make Virgo anxious here). So the person may seek to analyze feelings, express concerns with precision and focus on practical solutions to emotional issues.

Overall, this aspect can facilitate meaningful discussions about emotions, love or other Venusian affairs. I would also add sex here, considering its importance to Venus in Virgo and keeping in mind that the natural ruler of Scorpio is the 8th house.

Unless other planets are involved, this aspect itself should not be problematic, considering also the harmonious aspect (sextile).

I hope I've answered your question.

That made it very clear and well understood, thank you.

I'll try and make sense of the Mercury placement with this approach, but it's very confusing because there's just so many hard contacts being made to other planets, and I don't know which qualities will "come through" and which will remain "unexpressed" by Mercury.

Hard aspects to Uranus, Jupiter, Pluto, Saturn, Neptune etc., and the Houses/Signs make it very difficult to figure out how this would express in a person, as there's just so much happening.

How do you deal with approaching heavily aspected planets such as this? Is there a reliable "algorithm" or is it pure intuition?
