What is going on in South Korea? (Martial law declaration?)

I've been seeing a lot of protests regarding this. First North Korea openly blowing up roads connecting to South Korea, and now this?
From my understanding, Martial law is essentially a dictatorship override of democracy [allowing a military takeover and overriding civillian law]? The reasoning behind this from what I've seen has usually been if a state is in political disarray. However I do not see any true reasoning for needing this. The protests weren't even violent. To me, it seemed like this may have been a cover up in order to attempt to mobilise military forces on North Korea.
What I can see from this situation might not be correct so, can anyone explain in further detail what is going on, or provide more context?

This is unexpected and quite confusing for me, it seems war energies manifest in unpredictable ways.
I think, two big blocks are building and reinforcing, or communists vs "free" countries, like North vs South Korea, China vs Japan, Russia vs USA, so on. and this raises the pressure even more pushing countries to strengthen their "block" relationships even more.
