Do you actually want to change something in your life? If yes, ask why. Ask yourself why and be strict, like you need to convince someone of this. This is how you will show yourself that you really need to change that and get motivated; when you face all the reasons why. This way you will see if it is worth it. If approached thoughtfully it can be a tool for personal growth.
Let's say my resolution this year is to lose weight. If I set this as my 2025 resolution it is mathematically proven that I'll fail. I'll cut sugars/sweets for a couple of weeks and then day by day I'll return closer and closer to the eating habits I used to have. But why? Because this is generalized.
To lose how much weight? Let's say 10 kg. Until when? Until July. What do I have to do in order to achieve it? Eat healthy, exercise, jog. More specifically, to have a weekly meal plan, to go to the gym 2 times per week, to go jogging once a week.
Moreover, I have to ask myself what will make me drop out, and then reply. For example, I will be less likely to drop out if I find a meal plan (ideally go to a dietitian) that will support and nurture my body while it covers my cravings, with food I enjoy and is familiar to me, with the same budget. Also, if I go to the gym that is close to my house so I am not very annoyed to go there, go there on specific days when I know most of the time I am not very tired, and go at hours with low traffic, when it's less crowded so I don't wait to use the machines. E.g., to go jogging every Sunday morning before 10 am, when it's not very sunny and there are fewer people around.
If I start doing these for a week I'll see no difference in my appearance. So I'll get disappointed, unmotivated.
How can this break into small steps so that I stay motivated? To say 10 kg until July, but 0.5 kg per week and also taking measurements, 0.1 mm per week.
Also, I need to reward myself. This can be done by setting specific circumstances. If I do this for a whole week, then I'll do that hairstyle that suits me nicely. If I keep it up for a month, I'll buy that bracelet I really like. And so on, until the end of the main goal.
Be specific, set realistic goals, create a plan, commit/make it a habit, make it as easy as possible, track progress, reward. Also, you need to reflect on a daily or weekly basis. Am I still interested enough? Am I still motivated enough? And act accordingly.
