I am putting this here because it seems to be rather too far off-topic from this thread.
Tiny, little organisms being put into proper soil (which would need to be transported there first) over centuries or millennia would help to start to build a less-than-decent atmosphere. Things like lichen, etc. Lichen with cyanobacterial symbionts helps to fix atmosphere nitrogen and thereby improve soil fertility too. [sciencedirect.com]
Lichens are interesting organisms. They are diverse, adaptable, functional, and little understood. They play an important role in our natural ecosystems and can let us know when those ecosystems are in trouble. Lichens are beautiful, especially when you view a lichen-drenched Douglas-fir or a colorful crust-covered cliff, and up close when viewed under a hand-lens or microscope. [fs.fed.us]
That being said, terraforming Mars to have an atmosphere again might be impossible due to a lack of carbon dioxide [newscientist.com]. Welp, maybe we should build some dirty industry over there first, then... Well, after the soil fertility (if you will), plants and trees would be done. This would build-up the oxygen levels, and the dirty industry (if in all serious that would be permitted and actually enacted or even enforced) would help to an extent. We have plenty more than enough pollution here, so some filtering and transporting, or if not filtering then just transporting, it to Mars, for it to dissipate and spread out over the Planet, might help.

A research team discovered this new oxygen-generating reaction by studying comets. Most of these small icy worlds originate in a distant area of the solar system known as the Oort Cloud, far beyond the orbit of Neptune.

A team of researchers from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena found a new way to explain how comets generate molecular oxygen, the two atoms of oxygen that come together to form breathable air.
One already-known method is through kinetic energy. A sublimating comet is a busy environment, where the solar wind (the constant stream of particles emanating from the sun) can push floating water molecules into the comet's surface at high speed. If there are oxygen-containing compounds on the surface, careening water molecules can rip oxygen atoms off and produce molecular oxygen.
Molecular oxygen can also be produced through carbon dioxide reactions, the team found. (Carbon dioxide contains a single carbon atom and two oxygen atoms.) Former Caltech postdoctoral fellow Yunxi Yao and current Caltech chemical engineering professor Konstantinos Giapis simulated this reaction by crashing carbon dioxide into gold foil. Since gold foil cannot be oxidized, by itself it should not produce any molecular oxygen. But when carbon dioxide careens into the foil at high speed, the gold surface emits molecular oxygen.

There would be technicians and computer systems, etc., on watch 24/7 (or the Mars equivalent). Of course, this is all very, very basic and simple, what I am saying (and mostly assuming) here. There would be much more complex matters, permissions, logistics, costs, etc. Not to mention, the use of Magick to aid in the transformation of Mars back into an on-surface liveable Planet. There would also be Animal pioneers, transported presumably as eggs and sperms, to be borne on the Planet Mars, as well... This includes worms, ants, etc., for the earth/soil, as well.
For the magnetic field - that would be a different matter on its own. Only 2 weeks ago there were articles about it.

Colonization of any planet that is not Earth-like is a pipe dream. Mars and the Moon lack proper atmosphere for a reason. Can you imagine the kind of mega-projects that would be needed to grant each of these bodies a magnetic field?
Let's say you do stick 'rods' North to South. What do you do about Gravity? Just think of how many generations of colonists would be suffering before their bodies can finally become adapted to 0.4 Gs or less.
You'll also be condemning these people to live perpetually indoors, maybe even underground.
There are only two ways we could populate the Solar System. We give in to trans-humanism and become cyborgs or we ascend to another level of existence -- neither option requires centuries of terraforming.
