Typically, one whose Chakras aren't developed enough for true clairvoyance would only be able to see the Gods in deep trance, or Astral Projection.
I mean trance here - when you cannot feel your body level of trance. Not just playing makebelieve when daydreaming. Astral Projection can be very difficult to achieve for someone who has never done it consciously and experience of this can also lead to error. The energy of the Gods is electrifying, that is their hallmark. But one still has to be careful here, as certain entities on the Astral are also powerful. Make sure you ask questions.
Anything disgusting, robotic, tyrannical, spewing negative prophecies [these fall into the realm of the enemy, or someone's self-hatred] or conversely just telling you want you want to hear [one's own delusions] are not the Gods. The Gods have complex personalities and distinct ways of speaking, their energy also feels distinct in each way.
You can also summon them in waking life, but direct verbal communication is not forthcoming if you don't have psychic abilities. Signs, omens, etc. that are unmistakable take precedence on this level.
HPS Maxine as a clairvoyant was able to see ghosts and things like this well before she was able to see the Gods, but even then it took her a year and a half to see them fully.
There are other factors here. There are mental prerequisites related to soul development. How much you cleanse yourself and your environment, how much you've used the FRTR to dispel enemy bindings, Returning Curses, the power of your Chakras, and so on. The 'lighter' the dimension your soul is in, the easier communication can be.
