I have a non-official one.

A hand has 27 bones, the greek alphabet has 27 letters (24+3 archaic ones).

If you take the value of each letter and do the math, you find:

1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10
+20+30+40+50+60+70+80+90
+100+200+300+400+500+600+700+800+900=4995

4995/5=999
27=9+9+9

I made it up, but the numbers fits.
