I know firsthand how confusing it can be to navigate a relationship with your Guardian, and I’m still figuring things out myself. But along the way I’ve picked up some things that might help others who are also trying to understand their Guardian better. My Guardian has given me a lot of lessons and insights over the time I’ve known them. Some of this is personal to how we work together, while other parts align with what’s already in the ToZ and JoS archives. But I wanted to share some things - both old and new - that I’ve learned directly from them. Here’s a list of 18 things I could come up with to hopefully help others, or are just plain interesting.
1. Guardians usually choose their students.
There’s a reason your Guardian is your Guardian. It could be that your soul naturally resonates with theirs, they know they can guide you toward the ultimate goal, or your personalities just click. Or all of these things!
2. You might not meet your Guardian right away.
Even if you’re spiritually advancing, your Guardian may not reveal themselves until the time is right. Sometimes, you need to go through certain experiences and build your own spiritual muscles before you’re ready to receive direct guidance.
3. Guardians usually stay with you for life, but not always.
While some people may have different Guardians throughout their lifetime, most will keep the same one. From what I understand, a Guardian will only switch when someone undergoes massive change.
4. Your Guardian might have been with you for multiple lifetimes.
They don’t just guide you in one life and then leave. Some Guardians stick with their students across incarnations.
5. They might prefer direct communication over tools.
Mine, for example, would rather I talk to them without using tarot cards, scrying mirrors, pendulums, or Ouija boards. Those tools can sometimes make you dependent on external validation rather than developing direct telepathic communication. But if you’re still working on that skill, using tools is fine. (Though I swear, my Guardian is making me practice telepathy just so they can make sarcastic quips at me - keeps me grounded, at least. His comedic timing is gold.)
Once, on the topic of a blessed maiden, I was told that I was meant to carve my own path rather than receive blessings for nothing - that Godhead is something to be tempered and forged. I said, “I suppose.” My Guardian immediately cut in with, “That’s quite a supposition!”
6. Second-guessing them (or yourself) too much can create a wedge.
It’s like a Three of Swords moment - constant doubt can weaken your connection. The JoS text emphasizes trusting your intuition while also maintaining discernment. If a Deity keeps returning and their presence feels distinct yet similar to when you commune with the other Gods, that’s a strong indication they could be your Guardian, especially if you’ve been actively seeking them out. A Guardian’s presence can feel like an old friend, or a family member, or a teacher you trust. However, balance is key - while doubt can block communication, blind acceptance can lead to deception. The best way to know is by refining your sensitivity and awareness over time, and consistently performing protection work.
7. But assuming any voice is them is just dangerous.
A Guardian’s presence usually feels ancient, warm, comforting, and sometimes familiar - like a teacher helping you through a problem, or a family member talking to you. If something feels off, trust your gut. There are all kinds of frequencies in the astral, and not all of them are friendly. If you’re unsure, look for signs and compare what you’re hearing with what you already know from the ToZ. And if weirdness persists, cleanse your aura, your space, and your chakras thoroughly.
8. They’re not strictly male or female.
Like many Gods, they can shift forms. Sex isn’t rigid for them and like water, they can take any shape based on the situation. My Guardian has a very androgynous build, and generally couldn’t care less what I address them as.
9. Physical offerings aren’t required.
When I asked my Guardian if they wanted physical offerings, they directly told me: “There are many ways you could honor us, but many I won’t let you. We don’t need towers of riches or gold to be Gods. To honor us, swallow our lessons and hold them true.” They care more about how you apply their teachings than what’s on your altar.
10. They won’t always be chatty.
Sometimes, they’re busy. Other times, they know you need to figure things out on your own. “Like a mother teaching her child to walk, she won’t permanently hold his hand, lest he never know how to stand on his own.” But that doesn’t mean they aren’t watching over you. The mother may let go of his hand, but she sits by readily to catch him if he falls.
11. They can help with energy work - if you have the basics down.
I recently imbued an item with energy, and it was way too intense - I was getting heart palpitations and feeling emotionally volatile when I wore it. My Guardian told me to leave it on my altar so they could adjust it. A few days later (and after a rinse in moon water they helped me create), the energy was balanced and worked perfectly.
12. They talk to the other Gods.
Obvious, but worth mentioning. They work in harmony with the other Gods to help guide you.
13. They can guide you toward resources in the physical realm.
Mine has given me specific frequencies to listen to, plants to use, and countless other things. Their guidance isn’t just limited to the astral.
14. They really, really care about your progress.
They feel your highs and lows with you. But like any good teacher, they won’t do the work for you. Instead, they’ll hand you the tools to fix your problems and work alongside you. When you’re still new to something, they might step in more actively - but their goal is always to get you to a place where you can stand on your own.
15. A trick I discovered to tune into their voice:
Try putting on headphones and listening to someone talk. Pay attention to how an external voice feels in your mind. Then, compare that to your own inner thoughts. A God’s voice will have that same “separate” feeling. Keep a close eye on where in your mind these voices “sit”. Personally, an external voice sits somewhere near my pineal gland, while my own thoughts feel like they come from the throat. When thinking, my mouth will sometimes move with the words I’m saying internally, but not when I’m listening to the God’s words. Training yourself to recognize these subtle differences can help you differentiate between your thoughts and an external message.
16. Guardians can and will push you out of your comfort zone.
Growth doesn’t happen in stagnation. If you feel like your Guardian is pushing you into situations that challenge you - whether spiritually, mentally, or in your everyday life - it’s likely for a reason. They aren’t here to make things easy; they’re here to make you stronger. That’s not to say they’ll throw you in the deep end with no life preserver, but they may introduce challenges you are capable of overcoming through some effort, and if you apply the lessons they’ve already taught you.
17. They fully expect you to achieve Godhead.
Maybe not in this incarnation, maybe not the next - but eventually you will if you just put in the work. The Gods love humanity and want us to grow and join them. That’s what Guardians are here for. And here’s something my Guardian made clear: it’s closer than most people realize. Achieving Godhead isn’t some far-off, impossible pipe dream - it’s actually more achievable than many think, and with real effort, it’s something we can all reach. We just need to be willing to get uncomfortable and really earn it, to jump into the fire, to hold ourselves responsible, and come out the other side tempered into something more.
18. Godhead isn’t the final goal - it’s the baseline.
For a mortal, achieving Godhead is the ultimate goal. But once you get there, it’s just the beginning. It becomes your foundation for everything else.
