Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel's attorney general announced Thursday he intended to indict Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in a decision just weeks ahead of April elections.

The long-awaited announcement will further shake up the turbulent political campaign and threaten Netanyahu's lengthy tenure at the top of Israeli politics.

Bremen (Germany) (AFP) - As Chancellor Angela Merkel readies to slowly leave the political stage and her party consigns her immigration policy to history, a German theatre is putting on a play that already suggests the end of an era: "Angela I."

The veteran leader affectionately known as "Mutti" (mummy) plans to close the curtain on her marathon reign by 2021, but the Bremen Shakespeare Company has wasted no time imagining her legacy.

Video - David Lammy explains Stacey Dooley 'white saviour' comments
Ut19AXM.png

David Lammy has responded to criticism of his description of Stacey Dooley over her work on a film in Uganda for Red Nose Day. The Labour MP claimed the world did not need "any more white saviours" after the Strictly Come Dancing star was pictured holding an African child. Mr Lammy said that the term "white saviour" comes from Victorian times, "when the white man or woman turned up in Africa, picked a young child from poverty, and did very little about the surrounding issues". The Member for Tottenham said Comic Relief needed to be "in greater partnership with the continent of Africa", suggesting they film live from Africa on the night and use African filmmakers.

Comic Relief co-founder Sir Lenny Henry defended the charity as he waded into the ‘white saviour’ row between Stacey Dooley and MP David Lammy.

The 60-year-old comedian, who has been involved in the charity since its inception in 1985, touched on the controversial topic while appearing at Comic Relief’s Spectacular fundraiser at Wembley Arena on Thursday night.
Making reference to MP David Lammy’s jibe at Stacey Dooley for posting ‘white saviour’ pictures with children in Uganda on Instagram, Sir Lenny quipped the politician might say “screw you white people” in a gag at the fundraiser.

It came after Sir Lenny said how proud he was to be involved with Comic Relief.

1985? How much money has it raised - and how much has it not helped anyone while things continue to get worse and worse?!
Comic Relief hit £1 billion. Red Nose Day 2015 was special. If the end-of-night total of £78,082,988 wasn't impressive enough, it brought the amount raised by Comic Relief, over the last 30 years, to more than £1 billion.

The same with Children in Need, having raised £1bn in 40 years. How many many-more charities and false-helps are there, having raised so many billions?!?!

MPs' basic pay set to increase by more than £2,000 in April

MPs' basic pay is set to increase by more than £2,000 in April, taking their salary to almost £80,000, the parliamentary expenses watchdog has announced.

The above inflation increase has triggered a backlash from campaigners and some MPs, who have compared the rise to that of civil servants and parliamentary staff.

The annual adjustment - effective from 1 April - means MPs' salaries will increase from £77,379 to £79,568 - a hike of £2,089.

U.K. Inequality Runs Deeper Than You Think
0e4WK29.jpg

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- From left to right, British politicians have taken one particular issue to heart.

“When it comes to opportunity we won’t entrench the advantages of the fortunate few, we will do everything we can to help anybody,” said Theresa May in her maiden speech as prime minister in July 2016. Since becoming Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn has lambasted “grotesque” disparities that he believes to be the consequence of nearly a decade of Conservative party rule. “We cannot go on creating worse levels of inequality,” he said in a 2017 interview.

Labour antisemitism apology letter signed by nearly 1,000 Corbyn supporters
Uzx9xtj.jpg

Nearly 1,000 Jeremy Corbyn supporters have signed an open letter apologising to the Jewish community, saying Labour has been “too slow” to recognise the problem of antisemitism in the party’s ranks.

It follows the suspension of the MP Chris Williamson from Labour, after he angered colleagues and Jewish campaigners for claiming the party had been “too apologetic” over antisemitism accusations.

Just last week Luciana Berger, a Jewish MP, also quit the party claiming it was “institutionally antisemitic” – a move described as the “worst day of shame” in Labour’s 120-year history by deputy leader Tom Watson.

Labour and several of its constituency parties around the country were embroiled in a series of rows about antisemitism on Friday night in the aftermath of the suspension of MP Chris Williamson.

The escalation of tensions saw arguments in one constituency about voting rights of Jewish delegates, at least two others passing motions saying antisemitic concerns were overstated, and a sharp exchange between the party’s deputy leader and its general secretary.

At the Hampstead and Kilburn constituency annual meeting in north London, the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) complained that four delegates from the party affiliate had been in effect prevented from taking part. The dispute culminated in a lengthy row at the meeting itself.

A leading Jeremy Corbyn ally has said Labour’s handling of anti-Semitism over the past 12 months has been “disastrous”.

Shadow international trade secretary Barry Gardiner made the claim on BBC Question Time, though he denied accusations the party is institutionally anti-Semitic, adding it was Mr Corbyn who put in place procedures to report incidents.

It follows another week of trouble in the party, after Chris Williamson – another ally of Mr Corbyn – said Labour had been “too apologetic” in its handling of complaints. He has since been suspended.

Ilhan Omar Fears Her ‘Jewish Colleagues’ Are Using Anti-Semitism Charge to Shutdown Debate
MwCl7WI.jpg

Representative Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) pushed back Wednesday against the rash of anti-Semitism accusations that have been leveled against her since she was elected, suggesting her “Jewish colleagues” and others may use accusations of bigotry to chill debate over U.S. policy toward Israel.

“What I’m fearful of — because Rashida and I are Muslim — that a lot of our Jewish colleagues, a lot of our constituents, a lot of our allies, go to thinking that everything we say about Israel to be anti-Semitic because we are Muslim,” said Omar, who was joined at the “Progressive Townhall” event in Washington, D.C. by fellow freshman representative Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.).

Central Banker Who Shocked Israel Defends Her Surprise Rate Hike
JVUgKBH.jpg

The outcome of the lone meeting Nadine Baudot-Trajtenberg chaired at the Bank of Israel will resonate long after her five-year term as deputy governor ends this week.

Last November, Baudot-Trajtenberg as acting governor led the decision to raise interest rates for the first time since 2011. Although economists have questioned the move, Baudot-Trajtenberg said the decision was “completely coherent” with domestic economic data that has come out since, even as overseas the picture has darkened.

Shaken by the abuse, the 37-year-old Israeli posted a video of the December 2017 incident, filmed by his friend, on social media.

The video went viral and unleashed a torrent of anti-Semitic hate mail.

"There are people who are obsessed by me," said Feinberg with a wry smile, as he pointed to the latest abuse that has appeared on his social media account -- more than 65 pages of insults sent by a certain Lutz F.

GENEVA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli security forces may have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in killing 189 Palestinians and wounding more than 6,100 at weekly protests in Gaza last year, United Nations investigators said on Thursday.

The independent panel said it had confidential information about those it believes to be responsible for the unlawful killings, including Israeli army snipers and commanders. It called on Israel to prosecute them.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A prominent human rights lawyer in Iran who defended protesters against the Islamic Republic's mandatory headscarves for women has been convicted and faces years in prison, an activist group said Wednesday.

The conviction of Nasrin Sotoudeh, who previously served three years in prison for her work, underlines the limits of challenging Iran's theocracy as it faces economic pressure exacerbated by the U.S. pulling out of Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers.

UK's cash payments system could collapse in two years

The UK's cash payments system could collapse in two years, the industry has warned, as the Treasury is being urged to step in to save it.

Companies which circulate, sort and distribute coins and notes say the rapid trend towards digital payments will soon render their businesses unprofitable, sources told the Daily Telegraph.

It is understood that most businesses involved in the cash system have given it between two and five years before it will become commercially unviable in its current form.

Link's "Access to Cash" review published today warned that the system was on "the verge of collapse" with bank branch and ATM closures leaving entire communities without a hole in the wall just the "tip of the iceberg".

It recommends that a "guarantee of cash access" should be introduced to help the UK avoid sleepwalking into a cashless society, which would mean businesses providing essential services like energy firms and supermarkets would be legally required accept cash payments.

Natalie Ceeney, independent chair of the review, is calling on the Treasury to regulate access to cash in order to save it. Cash should be seen as a core part of the UK's infrastructure and not just a commercial issue, it said.

Currency experts have warned that as the uncertainty surrounding Brexit continues, the value of the British pound, which has remained depressed against the US dollar and the euro since the UK voted to leave in the EU referendum, is likely to fluctuate. (Photo by Matt Cardy/Getty Images) The report said: "For consumers, we believe that it is both sensible and commercially viable for the banks and regulators to offer a "guarantee" of cash access.

"In part, they can do this by encouraging innovative ways of accessing cash, rather than just protecting increasingly unviable ATMs, or worse, charging consumers for access.

"To protect cash acceptance, we believe that if we can help the banks keep the costs of cash down as its use declines, and to innovate around cash deposit solutions, then there will be fewer commercial incentives for retailers to stop taking cash."

v2YWq21.jpg

© Provided by Telegraph Media Group Limited Map of independent ATM concentration

The review is funded by cash machine network Link, but is independent from it. Fears over access to cash have been heightened amid bank branch and ATM closures - leading to worries that people's access to physical money, particularly in rural areas, is disappearing.

But the report said the problem is not just about people being able to withdraw cash - it is also about whether, in future, people will be able to make purchases at places which accept cash payments. It said the economics of handling and accepting cash is likely to lead to an increasing number of retailers going cashless.

Nicky Morgan, who chairs the Treasury Select Committee, said: "The publication of this report marks an important milestone, and it's clear that the hard work for policymakers must start here. "The complexity of this issue cannot be overstated, but the simple truth is that leaving the future of cash to be determined by market forces will not work."

A million public sector workers paid less than living wage, says report
0FPBknw.jpg

© PA The Living Wage Foundation said up to 1.2 million people receive less than the living wage of £9 an hour.

More than 1 million public sector workers in Britain are paid less than the amount required to make ends meet, trapping them in in-work poverty, according to a report.

The Living Wage Foundation said as many as 1.2 million people working for the NHS, councils and other public sector employers receive unsustainably low wages of less than £9 an hour, or £10.55 in London.

It said public sector workers, employed either directly by the state or on outsourced contracts, account for up to 20% of the 6 million people in Britain paid less than this level – the real living wage – which is a voluntary minimum set each year to reflect living costs.

Is this proof your smart phone is eavesdropping on EVERY single word you say - and worse, using what you talk about to bombard you with adverts?
TMuNZRU.jpg

It was after having dinner with a friend in London’s Canary Wharf that I first became suspicious.

We had settled into our seats and arranged our belongings – my iPhone placed in front of me on the table, as usual – when I noticed my companion was struggling to read the menu without glasses.

‘I thought you’d had laser eye surgery?’ I asked. ‘Yes,’ she replied. ‘But it only works for long distance.’

It was a mundane conversation between friends, just like any other that takes place at countless dinner tables across Britain – but one which, in fact, turned into something altogether more unsettling.

Within hours, I used my mobile to scroll through my Facebook account and, with growing unease, noticed adverts for LASIK laser eye surgery and a selection of spectacles from LadyBoss glasses appearing alongside the usual updates from friends.

I saw a video on the youtubes where a person presenting the video was talking to us, the viewers, and live (recorded) while doing so he looked and saw adverts for key words which he spoke to us in the video seconds before.

Social media firms to face huge fines for failing to keep children safe

AYA8JnZ.jpg

Social media firms face huge fines if they fail to keep children safe online under a new legally enforced code that will be enacted as early as this autumn.

In what campaigners say will be a sea change in online safety, the tech giants will be required by law to enforce their terms and conditions to protect children from harmful content such as cyberbullying, self-harm, sexual content and abuse – and prevent under-age children from joining their sites.

Companies such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat will be expected to ensure that only children aged 13 and over are on their platforms and that the content is appropriate for their age.

Those that breach the “age appropriate” code face fines of up to 4 per cent of global turnover by Elizabeth Denham, the Information Commissioner, who will police the new regime.

If these "huge" fines are anything like what happened to Micro$hit, then, for example a £1million/day fine is nothing to them because M$ made something like £10m per day.

Video - TikTok has been illegally collecting children’s data

(Video by Mashable)

TikTok is paying the FTC a record fine of $5.7 million for collecting the data of kids under 13. As the latest network to house viral memes, comedy sketches, lip-syncing music videos, and silly challenges, TikTok has quickly become one of the most popular social media apps.

TikTok, which allows users to upload 15-second video clips underneath soundbites, songs, and effects, has already surpassed the number of users Snapchat and Twitter have. With its recent milestone of 1 billion downloads, it’s now receiving more interest in the Apple App Store than competitors like Facebook and Instagram.

As Vox internet culture reporter (and TikTok fan) Rebecca Jennings put it in December, “thanks to its algorithm that makes binge-watching irresistible, as well as a sophisticated array of sound and visual effects, TikTok offers far more possibilities for creators.”

Speaking about irresistible - similarly, phone app games are made to be very addictive; therefore, we have the picture (which I can't find...) of a mum dragging her son to be indoors in the '90s and a mum dragging her son to be outdoors in 2000s+.

Mother jailed for 13 years in first British FGM conviction

© Other A cow's tongue found by police in the woman's home A 37-year-old mother has been jailed for 13 years after becoming the first person in the UK to be convicted of female genital mutilation (FGM).

The woman was sentenced to 11 years after being found guilty of cutting her three-year-old daughter despite using witchcraft to "shut up" her accusers.

Mrs Justice Whipple added two further years for possessing indecent images and extreme pornography at a hearing on Friday.

"FGM has long been against the law and let's be clear FGM is a form of child abuse," the judge said.

"It's a barbaric practice and a serious crime. It's an offence which targets women, particularly inflicted when they are young and vulnerable."

It is not known why the woman, from east London, inflicted FGM on her child but witchcraft has been cited as a possibility, the judge said.

Speaking of the psychological effect on the child, Mrs Justice Whipple said: "This is a significant and life long burden for her to carry.

"You betrayed her trust in you as her protector."

Caroline Carberry QC, prosecuting, told the court the child had recovered well but was likely to have reduced sexual sensation in the future, as well as long-term psychological damage.

The Ugandan mother's former partner was cleared of any involvement in the offence in 2017.

Commander Ivan Balhatchet, the National Police Chiefs' Council lead for FGM, said: "Female genital mutilation is a barbaric and violent crime - a violation of human rights - often with lifelong consequences, committed by the people children should be able to trust the most."

He said authorities were working with health, education and social care services to raise awareness of signs of FGM.

John Cameron, head of Childline, said: "Some cultures consider FGM a necessary part of bringing up a young girl. There may even be pressures for families to conform.

"The truth is it is a horrific form of child abuse and a criminal offence which has no place in today's society."

The trial heard how medics raised the alarm after she was taken to hospital with severe bleeding. Authorities were told that she fell and cut herself on the edge of a kitchen cupboard after reaching for a biscuit.

However, the child later confided in specially trained officers and said she had been cut by a "witch".

Ms Carberry said police found evidence of witchcraft when they searched the mother's home.

"Two cow tongues, they were bound in wire with nails and a small blunt knife also embedded in them, 40 limes were found and other fruit which when opened contained pieces of paper with names on them," she said.

"The names embedded included both police officers involved in the investigation of the case, the social worker, her own son and the then director of public prosecutions.

"These people were to 'shut up' and 'freeze their mouths'. There was a jar with a picture of a social worker in pepper found hidden behind the toilet in the bathroom. Another spell was hidden under the bed."

The mother gave evidence during the trial and denied she was guilty of FGM.

"It's a big accusation. Someone who would cut a child's private parts, they're not human. I'm not like that," she told the court.

But the jury rejected her account and found her guilty in February.

Natasha Wong QC, mitigating, said the child had not been subject to an FGM protection order and added: "Things may have been a lot worse if she had not been taken to hospital."

While being sentenced, the mother admitted having indecent images of a child and possessing extreme pornographic images.

Her sentences for those offences will run consecutively to the FGM jail term.

Outside the Old Bailey, deputy chief crown prosecutor Lynette Woodrow said: "We at the Crown Prosecution Service have kept in mind all the way through that at the heart of this case is a three-year-old girl.

"Her mother planned and arranged for this procedure to be carried out. She knew it was wrong. When it went wrong, Her daughter was seriously injured."

Finding a Place in Women’s Mosques

© Dmitry Kostyukov for The New York Times Kahina Bahloul is developing the Fatima Mosque while searching for rental space in the Paris region.

PARIS — These are heady times for Kahina Bahloul, organizer of a women’s mosque in France, a country that is home to the largest Muslim population in Europe. Practical considerations dominate the spiritual — a search for an affordable location, a flurry of radio and television interviews marking the rise of a vanguard of women imams leading pop-up mosques from Berlin to Berkeley, Calif.

Ms. Bahloul, 39, who was trained as a lawyer in Algeria, said she stopped attending formal prayer services in Paris about three years ago because “I didn’t feel respected.”

She said she was taken aback by mosques that isolated women, steering them to back doors and relegating the worshipers to basements or seats hidden behind screens. She gave up after one mosque directed the women to pray in a nearby garage.

A man with HIV has entered remission following an “improbable” stem cell transplant, becoming only the second patient in history to do so.

The unnamed man, known as the “London patient”, was diagnosed with HIV in 2003 and started taking drugs to control the virus, which causes Aids, in 2012.

News that HIV has been wiped from the system of a man for only the second time in history has been welcomed by scientists, but those working in the field are already looking to treatments more suitable for widespread use.

An HIV cure “remains elusive.” Such is the modest opening of a splashy paper published yesterday in Nature. The scientists go on to describe a remarkable feat: a man with HIV has been in remission for a full year and a half, following at bone marrow transplant, during which he took none of the antiretroviral drugs that are typically needed to manage the infection. It is no doubt great news for this field of science, and for this one man.

But, the authors write, “it is premature to conclude that this patient has been cured.”

Scientists believe a patient in Germany may be the third person in the world to have been cleared of HIV.

According to the New Scientist magazine, a team of researchers from the Netherlands announced the existence of the “Dusseldorf patient” at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Seattle.

This patient underwent the same type of bone marrow transplant as two other HIV-free patients. Now, three months after stopping antiviral drugs, biopsies from the patient’s gut and lymph nodes show no infectious HIV, researcher Annemarie Wensing of University Medical Center Utrecht told New Scientist.

Another man was the first and only. This new patient proves the first's wasn't a fluke. This stem cell treatment won't be common practice. Why not? Because it works?!
