1) You should not start a Venus square when it turns retrograde and for all the retrograde motion. If you started before, you can continue it and it will be effective. The calendar takes this already into account when suggesting dates.

2) The retrograde shadow doesn't matter. It turned retrograde on the 19th of December. That's the date that matters. However, you may be undermining your working by thinking it's ineffective.

3) The 29th of January is the date that matters. However, Venus is still in Capricorn, which is not the best sign for a Venus square. Venus will enter Pisces on the 5th of April, making the 8th of April the most suitable date to start a Venus square.

Turning direct means 'leaving retrograde' as a planet cannot be retrograde and direct at the same time. They do not spin in different directions at the same time. What the shadow means is that it's slowing down in speed (before becoming retrograde) or picking up speed (after going direct).

Capricorn is a neutral sign for Venus. If you really want to start a square with Venus in Capricorn (not usually recommended at all because it's much weaker), check if you like what that placement entails in your chart. Also, check for aspects between the current Venus and your natal planets. Check progressions, check solar returns, check solar arc, check lunar return... Maybe even a Venus return wouldn't be bad.
