Altar advice

I was just wondering whether it is necessary to place a black or blue cloth over your altar as a sign of respect or if it is just optional as I am in the middle of making one and would need to know so I could improve the design. Thanks

It makes the altar look nicer and more put together. It's your altar though. It's highly personal so follow your intuition as to what you should do.
There are pictures of altars on JoS under Satanic Rites and Celebrations. Perhaps you could derive inspiration from those pics.
