Will Mercury square or a runic working be better for this? I want to get through books more quickly but actually retain what I'm reading as well along with the speed. And to be able to quickly interpret what I'm reading so I don't have to read the same line 3x.

You should not do work on speed of study, but on understanding the text. If you read quickly you cannot understand what you read. Speed reading is used in a particular way in study. Now concentrate on understanding the text. Logical analysis helps a lot. Grammatical analysis is useless here.
