You need to actively vibrate or otherwise chant the mantra. Listening does not make an actual difference in the sense that you are not raising energy that way (see three steps of witchcraft).

Audio recordings during energy raising can be distractive to some extent and it is generally better to give full focus during the energy raising procedure where you are vibrating a mantra.
